From staff reportsThe Tulane women’s basketball team will begin the 2008-09 season in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament, as the 16-team field was announced Monday. Tulane will host Illinois State on Nov. 14 in the first round at Fogelman Arena.
“This is an exciting way to start the season,” Coach Lisa Stockton said. “It’s a tremendously competitive field and should be a great challenge for us. We open the season with two NCAA Tournament teams from last season, so I’m glad we can start the tournament at home.”
Twelve of the 16 teams in the field advanced to the postseason last season, including eight NCAA Tournament teams: Illinois State, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Xavier, Liberty, Robert Morris, Cleveland State and Arizona State.
The winner of the Tulane-Illinois State game will face the Cleveland State-Arizona State winner at a site to be determined. Also in Tulane’s bracket are UC-Riverside, Oklahoma, Middle Tennessee State and Louisiana-Lafayette.
The remainder of Tulane’s schedule will be announced at a later date.
The Green Wave, which returns nine players with three newcomers, finished 16-14 this past season.

Women’s Basketball Adds Transfer Danielle Nunn :: 5-9 Sophomore Guard Joins Green Wave from TCU
5-9 Sophomore Guard Joins Green Wave from TCUMay 13, 2008
The Tulane women’s basketball team has added guard Danielle Nunn as a transfer from TCU, head coach Lisa Stockton announced. Nunn, a 5-9 sophomore from Arlington, Texas, owns a .485 career field goal percentage.
“Danielle was a highly recruited player out of high school, coming from a very successful program at Arlington Bowie,” head coach Lisa Stockton said. “She’s a great athlete with outstanding defensive instincts. She plays with a great intensity and love of the game. We look forward to having her here at Tulane and on the floor in 2009.”
Nunn will have to sit out the 2008-09 season per NCAA transfer rules, and will then have two years of eligibility remaining.
She averaged 6.2 points per game and shot 49 percent for the season last year with Texas Christian, averaging 16.9 minutes per game off the bench as a sophomore. She handed out 36 assists to go with 33 steals in 35 games for the Horned Frogs. She scored in double-figures in eight games, including the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament against San Diego State. Her career-high in rebounding came in the WNIT, when she grabbed seven boards in a win over Boise State.
As a freshman, Nunn was named TCU’s Freshman of the Year after she averaged 5.4 points per game, with 34 steals in 29 contests. She ranked second on the team, and first among guards, with her 47.7 shooting percentage, and scored a career-high 14 points against Conference USA opponent Houston.
In high school, Nunn was a four-year varsity guard at Arlington Bowie, where she was named the Class 5A Most Valuable Player at the 2005 state championship. Nunn was also honored on both the all-region and all-state teams three times from 2004-06.
Six of the top eight scorers from last season’s 16-14 team will return for the Wave, who have nine returning letter-winners for 2008-09. The Green Wave also added junior college transfer Indira Kaljo, who will be eligible to play right away, and have two commitments from high school set to join the team next season.
