NEW ORLEANS - Fogelman Arena, the storied venue of the Tulane basketball programs, will play host to the 2009 Conference USA Women’s Basketball Championship this March, the conference announced at its meeting of the Board of Directors.

“We are pleased to host another Conference USA Championship,” Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson said, “and we look forward to another exciting season of Tulane women’s basketball, which will be showcased as we host in Fogelman next spring.”

All 12 teams of C-USA will travel to New Orleans for the tournament, March 5-8, for the single-elimination tournament. The top four teams will receive byes to the quarterfinals.

The Green Wave will be hosting the tournament for the second time in the 14-year history of C-USA. Tulane played host to the C-USA tournament in 1999, when the Green Wave won the tournament while seeded third to win their second of four C-USA tournament crowns. In 1981, the Green Wave hosted the Metro Conference Tournament in Fogelman Arena.

Tulane also won the C-USA tournament in 1997, 2000 and 2001. The Green Wave were regular season champions in 1997, 1999 and 2007.

Fogelman Arena, which opened in 1933, has been the host facility for over 20 women’s basketball tournaments, in the post-season and regular season, including conference tournaments, the Tulane DoubleTree Classic, and the pre- and post- season Women’s NIT. On the men’s side, it has hosted a number of tournaments, including the 1942 NCAA East Regional.

The Green Wave finished last season at 16-14, but won four of their final six regular season Conference USA games. Tulane will return nine players from last season’s squad, with three newcomers joining the active roster in 2008-09.

5-9 Sophomore Guard Joins Green Wave from TCU

May 13, 2008

The Tulane women’s basketball team has added guard Danielle Nunn as a transfer from TCU, head coach Lisa Stockton announced. Nunn, a 5-9 sophomore from Arlington, Texas, owns a .485 career field goal percentage.

“Danielle was a highly recruited player out of high school, coming from a very successful program at Arlington Bowie,” head coach Lisa Stockton said. “She’s a great athlete with outstanding defensive instincts. She plays with a great intensity and love of the game. We look forward to having her here at Tulane and on the floor in 2009.”

Nunn will have to sit out the 2008-09 season per NCAA transfer rules, and will then have two years of eligibility remaining.

She averaged 6.2 points per game and shot 49 percent for the season last year with Texas Christian, averaging 16.9 minutes per game off the bench as a sophomore. She handed out 36 assists to go with 33 steals in 35 games for the Horned Frogs. She scored in double-figures in eight games, including the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament against San Diego State. Her career-high in rebounding came in the WNIT, when she grabbed seven boards in a win over Boise State.

As a freshman, Nunn was named TCU’s Freshman of the Year after she averaged 5.4 points per game, with 34 steals in 29 contests. She ranked second on the team, and first among guards, with her 47.7 shooting percentage, and scored a career-high 14 points against Conference USA opponent Houston.

In high school, Nunn was a four-year varsity guard at Arlington Bowie, where she was named the Class 5A Most Valuable Player at the 2005 state championship. Nunn was also honored on both the all-region and all-state teams three times from 2004-06.

Six of the top eight scorers from last season’s 16-14 team will return for the Wave, who have nine returning letter-winners for 2008-09. The Green Wave also added junior college transfer Indira Kaljo, who will be eligible to play right away, and have two commitments from high school set to join the team next season.

NEW ORLEANS - Tulane women’s basketball head coach Lisa Stockton has received a National Letter of Intent from junior guard Indira Kaljo, a transfer from Ventura [Ca.] College. The WBCA All-America Honorable Mention selection averaged 16.6 points last season.

Kaljo earned First Team All-Western State Conference and CCCWBCA All-State honors last season, adding 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, and was named team MVP after leading the Pirates to a 29-6 record this past season. A consistent scorer, she averaged nearly 17 points per game while not scoring more than 23 in a single contest.

“Indira is a great addition to next year’s squad,” Stockton said. “She is an excellent three-point shooter and she is a great competitor with the desire to win at a high level. Not only has she been successful in her college playing experience, but she’s been steady and consistent throughout. We’ll look for Indira to contribute right away.”

She was a Scholar Athlete Award winner and earned the Kawasaki Pirate for Life Award for Ventura College last season. Kaljo arrived at Ventura via Utah State University, where she played in 22 games as a freshman for the NCAA Division I Aggies.

Kaljo, a native of Sarajevo, Bosnia, immigrated to the United States through Germany in 1993 and graduated from Montclair Prep High School in Van Nuys, Ca. was a four-year starter and first team All-CIF as a senior.
