NEW ORLEANS-The Tulane baseball team held their annual St. Michael’s Special School softball game on October 11, 2008. Celebrating its tenth year as partner to Tulane Baseball, member s of St. Michael’s got the opportunity to take to the field at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for a nine-inning scrimmage.

Members of the Green Wave baseball team were on hand to assist each St. Michael’s student with each aspect of the game, including fielding and hitting. St. Michael’s, a New Orleans-based institute specializing in the development of special needs children and young adults, brought out 40 students to take part in the softball event, one of Tulane-St. Michael’s gatherings in which the Green Wave baseball club take part.

“It’s something we’re really proud to be a part of,” Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. “It’s a win-win for both their kids as well as our kids. I think our kids get absolutely as much, if not more, out of that than theirs do.”

The event is sponsored by FedEx and a post-game ceremony takes place in which students at St. Michael’s are presented with medals for the efforts on the field. Tulane hosted close to 300 people, who came out to cheer on the students.

The Green Wave baseball team, already having visited St. Michael’s earlier in the fall, will make a return visit around the holidays and bring students out to their home field again in the spring.

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane football team will look to snap a two-game skid and get back into the win column when the Green Wave hosts Conference USA rival Rice at 2 p.m. this Saturday at the Louisiana Superdome. All Tulane football games can be heard live on WIST-AM 690, on the internet via the All-Access package at www.TulaneGreenWave.com, or on 88.7 FM in the Superdome.

Tulane (2-4, 1-2 C-USA) returns to the `Dome for the first time in exactly a month. After posting wins over Louisiana-Monroe (24-10) and SMU (34-27) in its last two outings at its home facility, the Green Wave dropped a 44-13 decision to Army in game that was played at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, and then fell two weeks ago on the road at UTEP in the final minutes, 24-21.

The Wave is 1-1 at home this season against Conference USA opponents, and 2-2 overall. Following the Rice contest, Tulane must play four of its final regular season games on the road, including games at nationally ranked LSU (#11) and Tulsa (#19).

Junior running back Andre Anderson is quietly made his way up the list of the nation’s top running backs this season. Anderson has established himself as the top rusher and all-purpose player in Conference USA this season, and ranks No. 4 in the country in rushing and No. 7 in all-purpose yards. Anderson also owns two of the nation’s top 10 rushing performances this season. His 255 yards at UTEP is No. 6, while is 219 yards vs. SMU is No. 10.

Anderson needs 148 yards on the ground this week to become the fourth player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-yard plateau, joining Matt Forte (2007), Melwelde Moore (2001, 2002) and Eddie Price (1948, 1949).

Despite back-to-back losses, Tulane’s defense remains the Conference USA leader in four of 10 defensive categories, including total defense, pass defense, opponent first downs, opponent third down conversions and is second in scoring defense, rushing defense and sacks, is fourth for pass defense efficiency and ranks seventh in red zone defense and eighth for opponent fourth down conversions.

Rice (4-3, 3-1 C-USA) features one of the most explosive duos in all of college football this season. The senior tandem of quarterback Chase Clement and All-American receiver Jarett Dillard has helped the Owls to a 4-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in league play, which is good enough for a third place tie with UTEP in this week’s Conference USA West Division standings.

Clement and Dillard have combined for an NCAA record 45 career touchdown connections, while Dillard has an NCAA record 54 career touchdown receptions. Clement is the team’s leading rusher (49.3 ypg) and passer (313.1 ypg), while Dillard leads the team in receiving yards (815), with James Casey grabbing a team-best 61 receptions.

The Owls’ defense leads the league with turnover margin (1.00) with 18 (9-ff; 9 int) on the year. Safety Andrew Sendejo leads the team in tackles with 50 (36 solo), while seven different Rice defenders have at least one interception this season. Rice opened the season with a pair of victories, but suffered consecutive losses in its next two road games to fall to 2-2. Since then, the Owls have won two of their last three outings, but are just 1-3 on the road with three straight losses.

Saturday’s game marks the 31st all-time meeting between Tulane and Rice, and the Owls lead the series, 15-14-1. Tulane owns a record of 8-5-1 at home vs. Rice. The Green Wave won the last meeting at home between the two teams, 38-24, in 2006. Since Rice became a C-USA member in 2005, Tulane leads the series, 2-1.

Tulane 2008 Fall Ball Season to Culminate in World Series :: Greer Field at Turchin Stadium to show New Orleans Saints international game on Sunday

Greer Field at Turchin Stadium to show New Orleans Saints international game on Sunday

Oct. 23, 2008

NEW ORLEANS–The Tulane fall baseball season is coming to a close and Sunday’s (October 26) contest will be highlighted with the airing of the London-based New Orleans Saints game on the video board at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The Green Wave exhibition game begins at 11am and will serve as a prelude to the Tulane Fall Ball World Series, which begins October 29. In honor of both the baseball exhibition as well as the New Orleans Saints game in London, concession stands will be available to spectators and there is no charge for admission.

Tulane has been holding fall workouts leading up the ceremonial closing of the fall ball season and spectators have an opportunity to preview the Green Wave’s 2008-09 squad with Sunday’s exhibition.

With a veteran-laden squad which includes 10 seniors, Tulane is only carrying four freshmen, and have used the fall preseason to hone the veterans’ abilities while acclimating the four rookies to the program.

“It’s more about trying to fine tune what we’ve got with upperclassmen and take their game to another level,” Tulane head coach Rick Jones said of fall ball.

“Freshmen have to make the adjustment, not only in fall ball, but when the lights get turned on in the springtime for real. I’ve been impressed with our freshmen. Jamie Bruno has really been impressive offensively, Ryan Doiron [RHP] has showed some ability on the mound. Jeremy Schaffer, our catcher has looked really well defensively and been swinging the bat. We think he will be a solid asset to our program. Evan Mistich is still transitioning between infield and outfield but has been swinging the bat well so we think that those guys are going to give us a core group of young guys. But we are going to be relying on the experience and leadership of the veteran team,” Jones added.

With so many returning skill sets of which is he already familiar, Jones was able to experiment with positions, which will help to increase depth of the Green Wave’s roster.

“Fall Ball is an opportunity to evaluate players not only in their traditional roles but maybe experiment with different positions just so that it increases your depth and versatility,” Jones said.

Also key during the fall season is the amount of repetition the players see. “From a team standpoint and an individual technique standpoint, we can spend a lot of time on repetition because you’re not playing another team and we can be repetitive in whatever area we think we need to emphasize,” Jones said.

After losing many players to the Major League Baseball 2008 Draft near the signing deadline, the Green Wave is carrying a smaller-than-usual fall roster and have modified the intrasquad scrimmages to include three rotating groups of four players, giving the offense more swings than they would have received in a traditional nine-on-nine setup.

Playing with a condensed roster has also presented players with an opportunity to step up and fill the shoes of their teammates gone to the professional ranks. Sam Honeck, a senior for the Green Wave, has been hitting well during fall intrasquad scrimmages and the coaching staff is looking to him to be an offensive threat during the regular season, along with fellow seniors Seth Henry, Andrew Rodgers and junior Josh Prince. Senior Scott Powell is also expected to shake things up on the base paths. Sophomore Conrad Flynn, a 6′3″ right-handed pitcher out of Midland, Texas (Grayson Community College) has thrown well during the preseason and continues to hit spots and work around the plate.

“[Flynn] is someone who’s going to give us a lot of help on the mound, inning-wise and we expected that,” Jones said.

Capping off the fall ball season is the Tulane Fall Ball World Series, which will also be played using the revised format of three teams of four players. Players will see six defensive outs, allowing the coaches to rotate them in between infield and outfield positions, so as to be able to observe who could potentially transition in an injury or pitching change situation. Different in-game competitions will also take place, with points awarded to either team for various scenarios such as quality at-bats on the offensive side, or stranding a runner in scoring position on the defensive side. Public address announcers will be on hand to setup and call the various plays for spectators.

The Tulane Fall Ball World Series will be a five-game series, with first pitch at 2:15pm on October 29 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
