AP Photo / Rick HavnerMatt Forte and the Bears are off to a solid start. The Tulane Green Wave has suffered back-to-back narrow losses to ranked opponents, but Tulane fans can still smile about one thing: Matt Forte.
The former Tulane star, now a rookie running back with the Chicago Bears, has powered his way to an impressive start with 215 yards (and a touchdown) in two weeks, good for fourth in the NFL amongst all runners.
His fast start has not gone unnoticed.
SI.com’s Don Banks says Forte continues to impress and bloggers on The Sporting News are calling Forte “the real deal” and believe he’ll become the difference maker in Chicago.

Interestingly, the threat of Hurricane Ike did not keep one highly regarded prospect from making a recruiting visit over the weekend, as Walton (Marietta, Ga.) defensive lineman David Paulsen braved the inclement weather to check the school out, according to Jeff Hood of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“We flew in on Saturday morning to Mississippi and drove the rest of the way [to New Orleans],” said Paulsen.
The defender is ranked the No. 31 strongside defensive end in the ‘09 class by Rivals.com.

For a team with BCS aspirations, the loss of a physical and emotional leader like Cotton will be difficult to overcome.

In other news for the 3-0 Pirates, the squad swept the Conference USA player of the week awards after its win in the Superdome, with quarterback Patrick Pinkney winning the offensive award, defensive lineman C.J. Wilson getting the defensive nod and the aforementioned Cotton receiving the special teams accolade.

The Pirates (3-0, 1-0 Conference USA) vaulted into the national rankings and national spotlight by upsetting Virginia Tech and West Virginia in consecutive weeks, and barely escaped having Tulane (0-2) pull the same trick on them.
Pinkney completed 22 of 32 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns, and the Pirates improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1999. ECU secured the victory when Pierre Bell intercepted Kevin Moore’s pass at the Green Wave 45 with 28 seconds left.
