TALLAHASSEE, FLA. — Tulane coach Rick Jones has decided to start Scott Powell in left field for today’s first-round game against Florida in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. Powell will also bat leadoff.Powell, a junior from Newman High, gets the nod over Aja Barto, who had started in each of the 47 games he’s played this season.
This will mark only the 13th start for Powell, who’s batting only .212, this season. His last start came April 9 against UNO.
Barto was plagued late in the season by a hamstring injury, but has returned to full strength, starting the last nine games. In last week’s Conference USA tournament, though, he was just 1-for-11 from the plate, with no RBI.
