Junior College Transfer to Join Wave for 2008-09May 7, 2008
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane women’s basketball head coach Lisa Stockton has received a National Letter of Intent from junior guard Indira Kaljo, a transfer from Ventura [Ca.] College. The WBCA All-America Honorable Mention selection averaged 16.6 points last season.
Kaljo earned First Team All-Western State Conference and CCCWBCA All-State honors last season, adding 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, and was named team MVP after leading the Pirates to a 29-6 record this past season. A consistent scorer, she averaged nearly 17 points per game while not scoring more than 23 in a single contest.
“Indira is a great addition to next year’s squad,” Stockton said. “She is an excellent three-point shooter and she is a great competitor with the desire to win at a high level. Not only has she been successful in her college playing experience, but she’s been steady and consistent throughout. We’ll look for Indira to contribute right away.”
She was a Scholar Athlete Award winner and earned the Kawasaki Pirate for Life Award for Ventura College last season. Kaljo arrived at Ventura via Utah State University, where she played in 22 games as a freshman for the NCAA Division I Aggies.
Kaljo, a native of Sarajevo, Bosnia, immigrated to the United States through Germany in 1993 and graduated from Montclair Prep High School in Van Nuys, Ca. was a four-year starter and first team All-CIF as a senior. She averaged 22 points per game as a senior, after averaging 18 points as a junior and 15 points per game as a sophomore. She led the Mounties to the third round of the CIF playoffs in 2006 and to the CIF semifinals in 2005, as well as an undefeated regular season her freshman year.
Kaljo will join two freshman newcomers and the nine student-athletes which return from last season’s 16-14 squad, including six of its top eight scorers and five players who started at least 10 games last season.
