Tulane Quotes Entering The Memphis Series

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University baseball team will look to improve on a 6-5-1 Conference USA record over the weekend when the Green Wave travel to The Volunteer State to take on league foe Memphis in a three-game series at Nat Buring Stadium.

The two teams open the series on Friday at 6:30 p.m., play again on Saturday at 2 p.m. and close out the weekend on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on the flagship station of Tulane baseball, WRBH 88.3 FM, and the contests will also be simulcast on the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com to paid members of the All-Access Pass. In addition, live stats are available on the official website of Tulane Athletics for free via GameTracker.

“We’re third place in the league and we have to keep playing well,” Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. “We understand that we need to have a great weekend. We’re in third place, and if we play well (down the stretch) we have a chance to be a viable postseason team.

“What’s kept us from being nationally ranked consistently, having over 30 wins and having everybody talking about another great year is that we haven’t strung together six or seven or eight wins in a row where we really did all three things (pitching, hitting and playing defense) most days. That’s what we’re looking to do.”

Tulane heads to Tennessee 27-13-1 on the year, 6-5-1 in Conference USA play, and looking to bounce back from an 8-4 loss to state rival LSU Tuesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

As a team, the Green Wave are hitting .291 with a .452 slugging percentage on the strength of 77 doubles, 17 triples and 38 home runs. Junior middle infielder Seth Henry and freshman utility athlete Rob Segedin are tied for the team lead in batting average with .336 marks, and junior catcher Jared Dyer is next with a .323 clip. Junior designated hitter Andrew Rodgers leads the team with eight home runs, Segedin has a club-best 41 RBI, and junior outfielder Aja Barto is 20-of-22 in the stolen base category.

From the mound, Tulane sports a 3.74 ERA and has held opponents to a .235 batting average. Green Wave hurlers have combined for 334 strikeouts and 176 walks in 368.1 innings. Junior right-hander Shooter Hunt leads the team with six wins, 78 strikeouts, a 1.59 ERA, a .126 opponent batting average and 56.2 innings pitched. Junior right-hander Mason Griffin paces the staff with 19 appearances and has six of the team’s 10 saves so far in 2008.

Memphis enters the weekend 16-25 on the year, 4-8 in Conference USA action and fresh off a 17-11 victory over Middle Tennessee State Wednesday night in Murfeesboro, Tenn.

As a team, the Tigers are hitting .252 with a .339 slugging percentage after belting 64 doubles, five triples and 17 home runs. Chad Zurcher leads Memphis with a .289 batting average while Brett Bowen and Trey Wiedman follow closely with averages of .287 and .280, respectively. Bowen and Wiedman pace the Tigers with five home runs each, Wiedman leads the squad with 29 RBI, and K.K. Chalmers has 15 stolen bases in 22 tries.

From the mound, Memphis has a 5.35 ERA and has allowed opponents to connect at a .297 clip. The Tiger hurlers have combined for 327 strikeouts and 174 walks in 371.2 innings of work. Brennon Martin leads Memphis with four victories while Scott McGregor paces the staff with a 4.26 ERA, a .318 opponent batting average, 42 strikeouts and 57.0 innings pitched. Neil Schenk heads the Memphis bullpen with 15 appearances each, and Matt Yokley has three of the team’s six saves this season.

This weekend’s games mark the 60th, 61st and 62nd meetings between the two teams on the diamond, and Tulane leads the all-time series 36-23. Under Jones, Tulane is 29-9 against the Tigers, but Memphis did take two of three from the Green Wave last April 6-8 at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La.

Following the three-game weekend at Memphis, Tulane’s next home game is schedule for Tuesday, April 29, when the team plays host to Nicholls State at 6 p.m. at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. NEW ORLEANS, La. - Freshman utility athlete Rob Segedin and junior right fielder Drew Allain posted three hits each, and rookie right-hander Robby Broach gave the Green Wave a solid 5.2-inning start, but it was not enough as the Tulane University baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision to state rival LSU Tuesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Tulane posted 13 hits on the night, including four doubles and a home run. The difference in the ballgame, however, was clutch hitting as the Green Wave stranded 10 runners on the basepath, including five in scoring position. The Tigers stranded seven on the day, but got a key two-run, two-out single by shortstop D.J. LeMahieu in the eighth to erase a 4-3 deficit and the duo of right fielder Derek Helenihi and catcher Micah Gibbs combined to drive in three in the final stanza to account for the final score.

“If we had a big hit in one of those (earlier RBI) situations, that could have changed the complexion of the ballgame,” Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. “They were able to do that late, and their bullpen did a nice job against us.”

Combined with a 7-5 defeat back on March 19 in Baton Rouge, Tuesday’s loss marks the first time LSU swept Tulane in the regular season since 2000. With the loss, Tulane falls to 27-13-1 on the year. LSU, meanwhile, improves to 24-16-1.

Tulane led 4-3 in the sixth following a one-out RBI double to center by junior first baseman Sam Honeck, but Louis Coleman came on in relief of starter Ryan Verdugo and thwarted the rally by sandwiching a pair of ground-ball outs around a walk. Following a scoreless seventh, LSU got things going early in the eighth as designated hitter Blake Dean - who went 4-for-4 on the night - opened the stanza with a double and Helenihi followed with a single to put a pair of Tiger runners in scoring position with nobody out.

Segedin, who started the game at third base before taking the mound with two out in the sixth, nearly wiggled off the hook with a groundout and a strikeout. From there, however, LeMahieu turned on a 1-0 offering and sent it swiftly to right to give LSU a 5-4 advantage it would not relinquish.

Tulane had a chance to tie in the home half of the frame was junior left fielder Warren McFadden smoked a one-out double down the right-field line, but Coleman got an infield pop-up and Shane Ardoin produced a 3-1 grounder to get out of the inning without any harm done.

In the ninth, LSU second baseman Ryan Schimpf hit a one-out single and stole second. With two away, Tulane elected to intentionally walk Dean. The move did not work out as planned, however, as Helenihi singled through the left side of the infield to plate Schimpf from second, and Gibbs followed with a two-run double to left central to put the game out of reach.

“It was such a good ballgame, but it just got away from us late,” Jones said. “I probably stayed with Segedin a hitter too long. I thought his stuff was good and it was a match-up with a lefty that we felt pretty good about. That didn’t work out and they stretched the lead.

“Early, we had some opportunities to build on our lead and we didn’t take advantage of that. And we got out of a couple of situations, too, early, and kept them from doing that. I thought it was a good ballgame in which we didn’t capitalize on as many RBI opportunities early in the game as we would have liked, and they stretched the lead late.”

Tulane drew first blood in the contest as Segedin belted a solo home run to right in the second - his third round tripper in the last four ballgames - but LSU answered in the top of the third when left fielder Jared Mitchell doubled to left, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI-single off the bat of third baseman Michael Hollander.

Two innings later, Segedin dropped a two-out, two-run single to left, but just as they had in the third, LSU answered in the next stanza with a solo home run by Dean and a two-out, RBI-double to right center by LeMahieu to tie things up again at 3-3. Allain opened the home half of the inning with a double past first baseman Matt Clark, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by reserve centerfielder Scott Powell, and scored on Honeck’s double off the wall in center.

Allain’s run was the last for the Green Wave as Coleman (3-0) earned the victory with 2.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen. Ardoin retired the only batter he faced, and Paul Bertuccini sat Tulane down in order in the ninth.

“I thought it was really a great game,” LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said. “It see-sawed back and forth, both teams played hard, but in the end we just came through with a couple of more clutch hits than they did. Late in the game, the difference was LeMahieu coming through with the clutch hit after Clark struck out and being able to tack on those runs in the ninth inning.

“I thought Coleman was awesome, and then Bertuccini has been great. Verdugo gave us a good performance. It was a good solid win for us, but Tulane has a great ballclub and they’re going to finish strong I’m sure.”

The Green Wave return to action on Friday, April 25, when they open a three-game weekend series with Conference USA foe Memphis at 6 p.m. at Nat Buring Stadium. The two teams will play again on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.

Tulane’s next home game is schedule for Tuesday, April 29, when the team plays host to Nicholls State at 6 p.m. at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The Green Wave took two-of-three from Southern Miss over the weekend. Junior RHP Shooter Hunt struck out a season-high 12 batters in Tulane’s 4-3 win over Southern Miss on Friday. He posted at least one strikeout in six of the seven innings he tossed, including a pair of two-K stanzas while striking out the side in both the sixth and seventh innings. All three of Hunt’s punches in the sixth came on nine consecutive pitches. He had a no-hitter through four and gave up just two hits during his time on the hill to improve to 6-1 on the year. Freshman 3B Rob Segedin and junior C Steve Moritz have both hit safely in their last five games and junior IF Seth Henry concluded the week having successfully reached in seven consecutive contests. Junior 1B Sam Honeck, however, leads the squad with an 11-game hitting streak dating back to April 2. Since then, Honeck is connecting at a .405 clip (17-for-42) with a .595 slugging percentage courtesy of five doubles and a home run. By hitting four home runs during the Green Wave’s 3-1 week, Tulane now has 37 bombs on the year which is already three more than the season total of a year ago. Junior OF Andrew Rodgers paces the 2008 team with eight home runs and junior IF/OF Anthony Scelfo follows closely with six.

Baseball To Host LSU Tuesday At Greer Field At Turchin Stadium

April 22, 2008

April 21, 2008

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University baseball team will continue the oldest rivalry in its storied program on Tuesday, April 22, when the Green Wave play host to arch-rival LSU at 6 p.m. at the new Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Tuesday’s game marks the 293rd meeting between the two schools on the diamond - a rivalry that dates back to 1893 - but the game will be different from the rest for one major reason. After hosting LSU in its last14 “home” games at either the Louisiana Superdome or Zephyr Field, the Green Wave will play tomorrow’s game on the Tulane campus for the first time since the 1997 season.

The game is sold out, but will be televised live locally on Cox Sports Television (local channel 37) and will be rebroadcast on CBS College Sports Network (Cox Cable Channel 315, DirecTV Channel 610, Dish Network Channel 152) on Wednesday at 11 a.m. In addition, the game will air on the flagship station of Tulane baseball, WRBH 88.3 FM, and live stats are available on the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com for free via GameTracker.

“Being back on campus is the exciting thing,” Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. “It’s an in-state rivalry and has more history than probably the majority of college baseball rivalries in the country. It’ll be the first time we’ll play them in our new stadium, it’ll be a capacity crowd and there will be a lot of excitement about the game for a lot of reasons.”

One of the reasons for the excitement circling the Tulane team is the play of the Green Wave in recent weeks. Tulane has won six of its last eight ballgames, and some of the players that started the year in a bit of a lull have come around both offensively and on the mound.

At the plate, junior college transfers Sam Honeck and Drew Allain have been swinging hot sticks of late as Honeck enters Tuesday’s game riding the crest of a 13-game hitting streak and Allain is hitting .321 in over the last eight ballgames. On the mound, Shooter Hunt has been dominant, but sophomore southpaw Matt Petiton seems to have found his niche as the team’s Saturday starter, and freshman utility athlete Rob Segedin has emerged as a viable option out of the bullpen. “We’re still learning more and more about ourselves,” Jones said. “I was encouraged with the way we played this past week. We’re starting to mature a little bit, but there’s still a long way to go.

“I think we’re playing better because we’re starting to understand our roles more and the guys are getting more comfortable in them. You play to find out. You never know. A team can have a bad week and then a great week. We’re trying to avoid having that bad week.”

Tulane enters the midweek matchup with the Tigers 27-12-1 on the year, 6-5-1 in Conference USA play, and fresh off a 2-1 series victory over C-USA rival Southern Miss over the weekend at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

As a team, the Green Wave are hitting .290 with a .449 slugging percentage on the strength of 72 doubles, 17 triples and 37 home runs. Junior middle infielder Seth Henry leads the team with a .341 batting average while junior catcher Jared Dyer and Segedin follow with respective marks of .328 and .327. Junior designated hitter Andrew Rodgers leads the team with eight home runs, Henry has a club-best 39 RBI, and junior outfielder Aja Barto is 20-of-22 in the stolen base category.

From the mound, Tulane sports a 3.63 ERA and has held opponents to a .231 batting average. Green Wave hurlers have combined for 325 strikeouts and 159 walks in 359.1 innings. Tulane will send freshman right-hander Robby Broach to the mound on Tuesday.
