Broach nabs victory as Tulane completes sweep of Pioneers
Monday, March 24, 2008By Nakia Hogan
Tulane Coach Rick Jones was at ease when he talked about his pitchers’ performance from this past weekend.
Still, there’s uncertainty what the future rotation will look like after ace Shooter Hunt.
Playing against an overmatched Sacred Heart team on Sunday afternoon, freshman right-hander Robby Broach made his bid to stay in his current role, helping the Green Wave to a 12-0 victory before an announced Greer Field at Turchin Stadium crowd of 3,594.
“We haven’t made a decision on that yet,” said Jones, whose team recorded its seventh shutout of the season. “We saw some things we want to address. But after Tuesday (against Southeastern Louisiana) we’ll know how we are going through the weekend.”
Broach (3-1) was serviceable, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. But Jones couldn’t have been happy with the five batters Broach walked in his 69 pitches before exiting.
“Robby realizes he has to cut down on his walks because those are the kind of things that you can’t defense,” Jones said. “He understands that. It’s just an execution thing. But he also pitched out (of trouble) and that was an exciting thing to see.”
Broach and Saturday’s regular starter Aaron Loup are in a battle with Jonathan Garrett and Preston Claiborne for the Green Wave’s final two weekend spots as the team prepares for its Conference USA opener at Alabama-Birmingham.
“I really want that job,” Broach said. “But you never know what the coaches are going to do or what they think, who they are going to give a chance to start. But that job would mean a lot to me if I got it. But I know there are a lot of pitchers on this staff that are capable of taking that job.”
Tulane (16-6) swept its second consecutive weekend series in impressive fashion. After outscoring Oakland 38-0 the weekend of March 14-16, the Green Wave outscored Sacred Heart (1-16) 25-2.
Tulane continued to turn in a strong defensive performance, going errorless for the seventh consecutive game and turning three double plays against the Pioneers.
Tulane also got another strong performance from its bullpen, as Josh Zeid, Matt Petiton, Taylor Rogers and Nick Pepitone combined for four scoreless innings, in which they allowed three hits and struck out five.
Third baseman Rob Segidin led the way offensively for the Green Wave, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Sacred Heart starter Jared Balbach (1-4) took the loss.
“We are just trying to get everything together before conference starts,” said Tulane catcher Jared Dyer, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. “We’ve been switching around the lineup a bunch, trying to figure out what combinations are best. We’ve switched around a lot, and every combination has worked. That shows we have a lot of depth.”
While the Green Wave put up a double-digit run total for the sixth time this season, its output was aided by a bevy of Sacred Heart blunders. The Pioneers had four errors, three wild pitches and a passed ball.
Sacred Heart’s defensive miscues began early, as Tulane scored three runs in the first inning without a hit. In that inning, the Pioneers walked one, committed two errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
“They played great defense for two days, but their numbers coming in were bad defensively,” Jones said. “We talked about it in pregame. I told them we have to continue to put pressure on them and see if we can force some things, and we did that.”
